I bought fish from
the market but when I went to the kitchen to cook it, Rajesh stopped me from
making it saying "Raghav is a vegetarian. He won't like that fish is being
cooked in this kitchen. You should have asked him before bringing non veg here."
Saying this, he took the plastic of fish from my hand and threw it in the trash
bin. It left me with tears as it was my first day in this house and he was so
rude to me. I started hating him but since Raghav loved him as a father, I did
not want to disrespect him.
Hours passed by and
Raghav returned from work. He ate the food that Rajesh cooked for him and he
asked me if my day was good. I looked at Rajesh and said "Yes it
was." I could see guilt in Rajesh's eyes as he lowered them in front of me
knowing that I was hurt by his behavior.
It was 11:00 p.m.
and I and Raghav went to sleep. Rajesh was sleeping in the servant's quarter. I
did not get sleep for half an hour as it was still a new place for me and I
kept rolling from one side to the other and then I got up from the bed and open
the door of my room to go and search for sleeping tablets in the study room of
Raghav. He used to keep his medicines in that room.
It was all dark
outside and I was too scared. I felt someone walking behind me but I did not
want to turn thinking it must just be my imagination. I walked few steps and
heard some foot steps following me. I stopped and my heart was beating very
fast. I turned to see who it was and as I turned, my eyes closed due to fright.
I opened my eyes and saw that there was no one there.
I took a sigh of
relief as it was just my imagination but little did I know that there was
someone present there who was following me. A hand bearing blood scratched the
wall and I heard the noise. I stopped again and started breathing heavily.
This time I had no
strength to turn. A hand was approaching me and I folded my hands around my
stomach and closed my eyes as I could feel the person walking towards me. I
started getting goosebumps and the wind was blowing heavily. The curtains were
flying due to the wind and I was shivering due to the chilling weather.
Suddenly, I felt a
hand on my shoulder. I screamed and the person came and stood before me with a
lantern.
"Madam, what
are you doing here?" The voice said.
I opened my eyes and
noticed it was Rajesh. "I....I want...I want some tablets from the study
room." I stammered.
"You should not
come out of your room in the night. Ask me if you need anything." He said
while walking towards the study room. He took out the tablets from the draw and
gave them to me with a glass of water.
I shivered and drank
them. "Remember, don't leave your room in the night." He said and
this time I did not say anything. I left the room but did not notice the blood
stain on the wall behind the study room.
I walked upstairs
and noticed his gaze on me as I walked up. I turned to shut my door and closed
it in a second. I was still shivering as this night was the first time I felt
so scared. I hugged Raghav while sleeping but I was still scared of what I had indirectly
witnessed.
Was I just imagining
someone following me with blood on his hand or was it really happening to me?
Was it a ghost or the soul of the slaves who were still haunting the place or
was it Rajesh himself or was it another person staying in the house?
It was morning and I
had forgotten what happened the previous night or you can say that I did not
want to remember the dreadful night. Raghav was still sleeping.
I got up from the
bed and felt a hand pull me back. I landed on top of Raghav and it was a
beautiful moment for both of us. I smiled as he tucked my hair behind my ears
and gave me a peck on my lips. I closed my eyes and rested my head on his
chest.
I just wanted to
live every moment with my husband thinking that there is no tomorrow and give
him all the love which he was longing for all these years. For me, he was more
like a child to me than my husband and for him, I was his baby.
"So, how was
your night love?" Raghav asked me.
"Hmmm...It was good. When I am in your arms, sleep just comes instantly." I replied and gave him a kiss on his cheek. "I'll go and make breakfast for you else it will get late for you to go to office."
"Why don't you
too come with me? Do you think that I won't like you working with me in the
office? If so, then it's not true. I don't mind it and in fact, I would love
that we work in the same office and you spend the maximum amount of time with
me love." Raghav said while putting my head on his "I love you and
spending 9 hours without you is very tough for me. I can't live without you for
a second."
"I too can't
stay without you Raghav but ....but I want to make this house a better place
for us so that we too can live here peacefully. It will just take me few days
and I hope you don't mind." I said while holding his shirt.
"Hmmm...OK. But
promise me that you'll join the office fast else I will open an office in this
house itself so that you remain before my eyes for 24 hours."
After few moments, I went downstairs and entered the kitchen.
I started preparing
breakfast for Raghav and I kept the milk for boiling on the gas.
I took a plank and
went to pick up a knife from the case and noticed blood on the knife. I dropped
the knife in a fright and started screaming when I saw drops of blood on the
kitchen floor as well.
Raghav came rushing
to the kitchen and I hugged him in fright. My hands were shivering and tears
kept dripping from my eyes. The blood drops had dried up and it wasn’t there
the previous day.
I caught Raghav’s
shirt tight and closed my eyes.
“What happened?”
Raghav asked with concern. I pointed at the blood drops and started crying
loudly.
“Rajesh…Rajesh come
here fast.” Raghav called out and Rajesh came in the kitchen hurriedly.
“What happened sir?
Any problem?” He asked while Raghav asked him about the blood drops on the
floor.
He looked at the
drops and immediately took a cloth and started wiping the drops. “I cut my hand
yesterday sir and the drops fell on the ground. I dint notice it. Sorry sir.”
“Rajesh uncle, please take care of yourself.
Is the cut serious?”
“No sir. I already
bandaged my wound.” Saying this he left the kitchen and turned to face me. I
looked at him as I dint believe him at all but since I saw the bandage, I did
not say anything.
